خطبة جمعة بأمريكا – الرحمة المزجاة – Mercy to All Creation

خلال زيارتي مع اسرتي لمدينة بتسبرج بولاية بنسلفانيا الأمريكية في صيف 2015 طلب مني عدد من أعضاء مجلس الأمناء بمسجد دار السلام (Islamic Center of Pittsburgh) الموجود في منطقة أوكلاند بمدينة بتسبرج تقديم خطبة جمعة بحكم أني كنت عضوا بمجلس إدارة المسجد ومجلس أمنائه وعددا من اللجان النشطة بالمدينة أيام البعثة فكتبت جزءا من خواطر شخصية لأقدمها في الخطبة التي عادة ما تكون مدتها 40 دقيقة بهذا المسجد (من 1:10 -1:50 دقيقة)

عسى أن تجد الأفكار آذانا صاغية وعسى أن يوفقني الله أن أكون من أوائل من يلتزم بها فجزء من أهداف التدوين هو تذكير النفس بما ينبغي القيام به

الخطبة طبعا باللغة الإنجليزية لأن المسجد يحضر فيه قرابة 800 شخص من أكثر من 20 جنسبة مختلفة

Mercy to all Creation

Friday Khutbah, Aug 21st, 2015

In the name of Allah, the most merciful, most compassionate, peace and blessings of Allah be upon His messenger, his household and companions.

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, I advise myself first and all of you to establish the fear of Allah in our heart and translate it into practice in our daily lives, and actions by becoming conscious of Allah’s presence in our daily life. When we are at home, with family, with friends, at work, and while having time for ourselves.

When we become conscious of Allah, we become aware of Him before we back bite or lie, we become aware of Him before we take a wrong action, we begin to put effort in making good deeds and actions. We begin to remember that the best people among us are those who benefit others the most. Those who help others the most. We remember that the more we help people (all people, not just “our” kind of people, the more we help people, Allah will provide us with people who will help us when we are in need. We remember that Allah will make the day of judgement easy upon us if we continue making life easy for the people around us.

And I say again, all people, not just “my kind of people”.

I am very happy to return back to visit Pittsburgh and meet this wonderful community again, years pass by, people come and go, but Islamic centers remain as they are, places of worship, community support with the blessings of Allah who always provides for supportive good community members that help in enlarging the community and strengthens it.

Brothers and sisters, I would like us all to reflect upon an incident that took place in Makkah before the prophet hood time, Quraish wanted to re-build that kaba, they wanted to do that from halal money, so they did not have enough money to rebuild the entire kaba. The money that was collected was enough to build the kaba as we know it today, the other area that was left out is what is referred to as Hateem today, that is next to kaba and has a small wall around it.

When the time came to put the black stone in it’s space, every tribe within Quraish wanted to have this honor, they started fighting, who should put the stone? The tribe that puts it, is the most honorable one, and each one felt that they are better than others, fighting erupted, a war was about to start, it is serious, each tribe leader wants this honor to himself. A wise man, shouted, let us not begin a fight over this, let us have a judge. Another argument started, who is this judge? Who is going to be un-biased in this issue? Each judge would want to favor his own tribe, so how would we go around this? They thought of a method to randomly choose a judge hoping to avoid any bias. They chose one of the doors around them and said whoever enters from this door is going to be the judge. They were all worried, another fighting may erupt if the wrong man enters, suddenly, our beloved prophet peace be upon him entered through the door.

All people were happy, the Truthful and the Trustworthy الصادق الأمين entered through the door, we all accept whatever he says. They all felt that peace was established when he entered into the place, all the heat and tension was replaced with a sense of trust and comfort to whatever this man is going to say.

The prophet then heard from all sides and then lifted the stone and placed it over a large piece of cloth, then asked each tribe leader to hold a part of the cloth to lift the stone towards Kaba, finally he took the stone a placed it in it’s current place. This way, each tribe played a role and felt comfortable and peace was established.

This is an example of a man who was a Mercy to all creation وما أرسلناك إلا رحمة للعالمين even before he was a messenger. A man of comfort

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُمْ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ (57) قُلْ بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَبِرَحْمَتِهِ فَبِذَلِكَ فَلْيَفْرَحُوا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ (58)يونس

Brothers and Sisters, Sir Bernard Shaw, the famous British writer and Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1925 said:

“I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it the much needed peace and happiness: I have prophesied about the faith of Muhammad that it would be acceptable to the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today.”

Mercy to all creation, humans and non humans. He was a mercy even to the non believers, sheikh Alsharawe may Allah have mercy on his sole, mentioned that the prophet was a mercy even to those who didn’t believe in his message because they were saved from being destroyed and punished like the people of prophet Noah, Saleh, Hud and others.

Brothers and sisters, let us reflect about this incident, try to imagine it as if it is happening in front of you. Tension, anger within the hearts of people of Qurasih, suddenly, they all felt peace inside them, they all felt comfortable and happy when the prophet entered into the room.

Now this prophet is suppose to be a role model, to who?

To Muslims?

No, the prophet is not a role model to Muslims, Allah told us that he is a role model to those who

لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة لمن كان يرجو الله واليوم الآخر وذكر الله كثيرا

He is a role model not to Muslims, nor to believers, he is a role model to those who seek Allah’s pleasure and remember Allah. He is a role model to those who are conscious of Allah all times, who think before they look towards something, or do something, or say something, or even think about something, think about Allah because they have Taqwa. Those people have the prophet as their example, they imitate his actions in their daily life.

Iman and faith goes up and down, we humans tend to forget, become weak, tempted, so it is important for us to constantly remind ourselves with allah, to seek His pleasure, do good deeds,  help others and make life easy for others, become walking Qurans, don’t give me a story from the life of the prophet, show me manners of Quran in your daily actions and interactions with people.

Going back to our prophet peace be upon and his effort in resolving the conflict,

Think of the feeling of comfort that took over the people of Quraish when he entered the room, think of the impression Bernard Shaw had about the prophet and let us reflect about our current status as Muslim ummah. Are we viewed in the same way? Does the world look towards Muslims to solve it’s problems? When Muslim representatives come to United Nations, or Security Council, do people think, Thank God, Muslims are here, Problem solved?

Forget about the global image of Muslims

Let us go down to personal image about me and you,

Each one of us, think of our surroundings, how each one of us is viewed?

When we enter to our work place, when we visit our neighbors, do people think, great, you are here, problem solved? Do people get the sense of comfort and peace when you are around the same way Quraish felt when the “our” role model entered through that door?

Each one of us make his/her impression on the surrounding, STOP worrying about the bad apples within the Muslims, and let us focus on OURSELVES. STOP thinking and feeling sorry and depressed for the bad examples and let us begin on making good examples of ourselves.

If any of us feels that he or she does not give this impression to others, then let us ask ourselves, why? What do we lack in our character? Why aren’t we giving the same impression our messenger gave?

المسلم من سلم الناس من لسانه ويده  والمهاجر من هاجر ما نهى الله عنه

Did Zionism or any imperialistic power inflict my behavior and yours? What does Islam tell us about the character? How should we behave with others?

We all memorize the hadith the rights of Muslims upon each other are to extend Salam when you meet, visit when he or she are sick, follow his/her Janazah, give advice when asked for one, and if he or she sneeze we ask Allah for blessing them.

Brothers and sisters, look at the people sitting around you, do you really feel inside you that they have these rights upon you? If not then why not? Who is to be blamed? Zionism? Imperialistic powers?

We all memorize the signs of hypocrites are not keeping their promises, not maintaining trust, and lying all the time.

We only have ourselves to blame if there is a blame, we must STOP blaming others and STOP bringing this conspiracy propaganda that is only there to justify our illnesses to ourselves.

We know these ahadith, and memorize them, but sometimes, we all fail to apply them in our daily interactions. Which is fine brothers and sisters, we are humans, we make mistakes, but we need to continue evaluating ourselves, improving our character, avoiding bad habits and think each time “what would the prophet do if he was in my shoes?”

The prophet taught us that

البر حسن الخلق، والإثم ما حاك في صدرك وكرهت أن يطلع عليه الناس

Brothers and sisters, we do have many good examples, many of our community members do bring this feeling in their surroundings, I have this even from Jail authorities who say that many violent inmates change their behavior to become peaceful inmates after becoming Muslims. Our ancestors went to Indonesia the country with the largest Muslim population, in fact, the number of Muslims in Indonesia is more that the number of Muslims in the entire Arab World, our ancestors went there when there was no Muslims at all. They began trading and doing business with the society, people were shocked with the honesty and character of those businessmen. People were impressed, wondered, what motivates those individuals to be so good, when they looked around they realized that putting the prophet as a role model was the motive. The entire region became Muslim.

Till today, I know many people who became Muslims, or began wondering about their commitment towards Allah just because them met someone with exceptional character and behavior.

What bothers me is putting the blames on others, like saying: Why should we be good? Look at that person! Why should I make sadaqa? Ask the rich people to do so! Why should I be a trustworthy? Ask those who are killing people in the name of Allah to be trust worthy! Why should I wear hijab and lower my sight? Look at those who do not do that!

Well brothers and sisters, shifting the blame will not work, each sole is accountable for it’s own action.

On the day of Judgement, Allah will ask me and you about what each one of us. We can’t tell Allah that time, you know there was this guy who was doing worse than what I was doing, at least I was moderate in my behavior.

It won’t work brothers.

On the other hand, don’t let the bad apples bother you, I am very thankful to Allah that we have bad apples and bad examples. Because if we didn’t have bad apples, Allah will destroy us.

(لو لم تذنبون لذهب الله بكم وجاء بقوم يذنبون فيستغفرون فيغفر لهم)

So brothers and sisters, let us shift the blame towards our inner soles and focus on our own sicknesses and weaknesses. If any of us realizes that he or she don’t bring mercy and comfort to the surrounding, then we need to think again whether we are among those who remember Allah and seek his pleasure in their actions.

Let us remember brothers and sisters that we are Allah’s khulafa on this earth. Allah brought us down to earth to maintain it and build it

إني جاعل في الأرض خليفة

هو أنشأكم من الأرض واستعمركم فيها

هو الذي جعل لكم الأرض ذلولا فامشوا في مناكبها وكلو من رزقه وإليه النشور

Let us while building this earth with engineering, farming, education, economy, arts, medicine, and all professions, let us do that while being conscious of Allah, while doing what is good to human beings, while being Mercy to all creation, humans and non-humans, to environment, by being problem solvers. Let us bring solutions to earth problems of un-employment, poor, hunger, illiteracy, diseases and wars. Believe me, changing the world starts with me and you

إن الله لا يغير ما بقوم حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسهم

When me and you change, the world will change. When me and you and each one in this Islamic Center change what is within us and become conscious of Allah in everything we do and look at the prophet as a role model, then extremism will disappear, occupation and oppression will vanish.

Brothers and sisters, during the battle of Ohod, Saydina Hamzah the prophet’s uncle died. His front teeth got broken. He fell into a hole in the ground, people thought that Islam was over, people were wiping the blood over his face asking him to make dowa against the people of Quraish. But he says ” Oh Allah guide my people, they don’t know the truth”

Guide my people !!!

He didn’t say “toot”, “toot” despite all the hardship he faced from them and the tough time he was going through. Some of us these days, loose our temper in situations that are much less comparable to this one.

Some may say, well, Muslims were defeated, he was weak, so he showed mercy. Unfortunately, some Muslims say, we must have power before we take an action. The merciful nature of the prophet was a principle that did not change with different situations. Even when he was powerful, victorious after entering Makkah and despite that habit of enslaving women and killing young men of war losers at that time, despite all the hardship he faced from Quraish, he told them you are all free, he did not even condition their freedom upon them accepting Islam, they were free to remain as Idol worshippers.

The next time you want to make dowa against some one who angered you, remember the prophet peace be upon him actions at this difficult time and chose is he your role model or not? The next time you want to say something remember that the prophet said that a believer never lies, remember that backbiting and mouth whispering (Nameema) is not acceptable and then chose whether you want to be among the people mentioned in the verse we recited earlier “those who seek Allah and remember Him”. Decide whether you have Taqwa or not before your speak and chose your way.

With these words I ask Allah SWT to forgive our sins, the sins of all believers. We are humans brothers and sisters, we make mistakes, we need to be determined not to return to sins, continue evaluating our actions and reactions and constantly ask for Allah’s forgiveness to ourselves and our loved ones.

Second Khutba

In the name of Allah, the most merciful, the most compassionate, peace and blessings of Allah be upon His messenger, his households and companions

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, in the first part of the khutba we spoke about the merciful nature of the message of Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him. How his presence established peace in the hearts of Quriashis at the conflict time and reminded ourselves that if we really want to seek Allah and remember Him all the time, we should think “what would the prophet do” before we react or make a decision in our work, in our interaction with people, with animals, with the environment and all surroundings.

In the second part of the khutba, we will continue reminding ourselves with more examples from the life of the prophet hoping that all of us would reflect on these examples and attempt to imitate the prophet when we face similar situations. After all, seerah is not a fairytale; it is something we should look for in our actions.

Allah SWT told prophet Musa before sending him to the Feron of Egypt

” اذهبا إلى فرعون إنه طغى * فقولا له قولا لينا لعله يتذكر أو يخشى “

Feron, who claimed to be God, oppressed the Jews and killed the Jewish children, and oppressed the people of Egypt at that time. Allah is asking Prophet Musa to SOFTLY deliver the message to him. Can you imagine, talking softly to a Moshrik claiming to be God?

How softly do we speak with each other at the time of disagreements?

The prophet peace be upon him said:

” إن الله رفيق يحب الرفق , وإن الله يعطي على الرفق مالا يعطي على العنف “

 اللهم من ولي من أمتي شيئا فرفق بهم فأرفق به ومن ولي من أمر أمتي شيئا فشق عليهم فاشقق عليه”

 ” ما كان الرفق في شيء إلا زانه وما نزع من شيء إلا شانه “

Hadith after hadith, the prophet peace be upon him asking us to be soft, to be kind to others. Kindness beautifies actions, and Allah rewards for kind actions more than other actions. We have these sayings and yet, some people think that becoming religious means acting tough and showing anger all the time, forgetting that even a smile is a charity.

Brothers and sisters, today is about me and you. Each one of us, try to remember the last kind thing each one of us did to his co-workers? To his parents? To his wife? To his kids? To his neighbors? The prophet is asking us to be soft, and he is a role model to those who seek Allah’s pleasure and want to remember Allah all the time.

Do you want to be among those or not? If yes, then act the way he wants us to do!

Series of verses and ahadith detailing the type of character Allah wants us Muslims to be. Allah is teaching us how to practically become merciful to all creation. Detailing how should we respond to different situations. We read them all the time, but do we apply them? Do we act accordingly? Are we conscious of Allah whenever we react to situations?

Listen to these verses and reflect on the last time we applied them in our lives?

” ولا تستوي الحسنة ولا السيئة ادفع بالتي هي أحسن فإذا الذي بينك وبينه عداوة كأنه ولي حميم “

والكاظمين الغيظ والعافين عن الناس والله يحب المحسنين

He was not just asking the companions to do these things, he was practicing them, he was a walking Quran. When his Jewish neighbor who use to daily put dirt in front of his house got sick, he went to visit him, what was the result? His enemy became a Muslim.

When a man cussed the prophet peace be upon him, our mother Ayesha was upset, she wanted to cuss back at that man, but the prophet said: “I was sent as mercy to people, I wasn’t sent to cuss and bad mouth people” How do we react if we were in his shoes? What would we do? What would we do with a neighbor or a co-worker who is harming us daily? Would we say “thank GOD he is sick!” or “I hope he dies”? if we want Allah and remember Him, then our prophet is the example.

The impact of these teachings of the prophet on his companions appeared when a slave for Sayidna Alhosain broke a plate, so Saydina Alhosain got angry. The slave recited the verse “those who suppress their anger”, so Saydina Alhosain, kept his anger away. The slave continued reciting the verse “and forgive people” so Saydina Alhosain didn’t ask him to pay for the plate, the slave continued reciting “allah loves the well-doers” so Saydina Alhosain freed the salve.

You see the impact of these verses directly on his actions. When he read them, he did not think that “I wish person x or y would read them”, he did not wish that others would suppress their angers, NO. He did not point fingers on others, he focused on himself first and directly applied them. It is faith in action.

Brothers and sisters, it is really surprising in the middle of all these verses and examples of Mercy and softness from Quran and life of the prophet, despite that, the voice of extremism is loud. I am confident that only the voice that is loud just because the majority is silent. Muslims are good people in nature, but we need to focus on ourselves more.

We need to reconsider how we view our options in life. Remember that whenever the prophet had a choice between two acceptable actions, he chose the easier one. Islam is not about hardship and making life difficult for you and others. The prophet did not always choose the “strict way” and being “strict” is not always right.

Well brothers and sisters, some companions decided to avoid women, stop enjoying life and isolate themselves from the world, so Allah revealed a verse criticizing their thinking:

يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم ولا تعتدوا إن الله لا يحب المعتدين  (87)وكلوا مما رزقكم الله حلالا طيبا واتقوا الله الذي أنتم به مؤمنون (88)

The prophet insisted many times that our religion is easy, our religion is easy, infact, he said that those who begin to make religion difficult to themselves and others, will fail on the long run, and the simple nature of religion will beat them.

( إِنَّ الدِّينَ يُسْرٌ ، وَلَنْ يُشَادَّ الدِّينَ أَحَدٌ إِلاَّ غَلَبَهُ ، فَسَدِّدُوا وَقَارِبُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا

( إن خير دينكم أيسره ، إن خير دينكم أيسره )

Brothers and sisters, examples for the message of Mercy from the life of the prophet are enormous. Therefore, we need to reflect and understand his personality. We should put effort in learning his teachings and his seerah and promote and bring out this merciful nature of his message because many people within Muslims and even non Muslims have the wrong understanding of his message.

The prophet peace be upon him was merciful even to those who disagreed with him. He walked over the big mountain of Taif for hopes of a new society that would save his people from the hardship of Quraish. The people of Taif harmed him, threw stones at him driving him out of their town. He sat down in a garden sad making dowa to Allah, so the angles told him “do you want us to collapse the mountains on the people of Taif? Do you want us to destroy them all for what they did to you? What would me and you say? What would we do if we have this super power willing to do anything to those who harmed us? They mercy to all creation said “No, do not destroy them, all what matters is that Allah is pleased with me, may be their siblings would grow to become believers of Allah”

The Christians of Najran when they debated him in Masjid Nabawi about his message and declined it asked for his permission to pray Sunday prayer in masjid nabawi and he allowed them to do it in Masjid nabawi. Ibn Alqayim based on this incident mentioned that it is ok to allow people of the book to pray in masjid when there is a need only.

Brothers and sisters, two Jewish men had a disagreement with each other, they left their tribal system, their clergy and came to the prophet peace be upon him to judge between them. They were not Muslims, they went outside their system to seek the judgment of the prophet. Why? What made them do that? Can you imagine? Leaving their tribe to a competitive tribe? What lead them to do that?

It is his personality, his image, they knew that he will be there to help anyone in need, whether a Muslim or non Muslim. You know the surprising fact as well? He judged between both of them using Turah, he didn’t even judge between them with Quran !!

Talk about freedom of religion before 1400 years !!

لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة لمن كان يرجو الله واليوم الآخر وذكر الله كثيرا

Mercy to all creation brothers and sisters, the role model to those who remember Allah and seek His pleasure. Each one of us, today, ask ourselves, is he our role model? Let each one of us make the commitment from today to change something inside our heart, suppress the anger, help the neighbor, do a consistent act of kindness, help maintaining this earth and building it with good actions, community support. When me and you change the conditions of our heart and purify our soles to become more conscious of Allah, me and you ! Then Alaqsa will be free insha allah

May Allah shower his Baraka upon all of us, may He guide us to benefits from the words and stories in His holy book.

Oh Allah bless Islam and Muslims, Oh Allah shower your mercy upon all of us, oh Allah, guide us to the right path, help us become better Muslims, Muslims who maintain this earth with your justice, kindness, softness and Mercy.

Oh Allah accept our good deeds, forgive our sins, you are the most forgiving,

Oh Allah protect our religion, protect the oppressed and help those who are in need

Oh Allah, don’t let us leave this blessed gathering without forgiving our sins, opening our hearts to your message, supporting us to commit to changing our actions and intentions to become between human beings.

Oh Allah give us good in this life, good in the hearafter, protect us from hell fire, take us to heaven with the blessed people, oh Allah make us among those who drink from the fountain of the prophet on the day of Judgement.

Brothers and sisters, allah orders us to be just and kind, maintaining keen and relations with relatives, and asks us to avoid sins and wrong doing, this is a guidance we hope to remember

إن الله وملائكته يصلون على النبي، يا أيها الذين آمنو صلوا عليه وسلموا تسليما، اللهم صل على سيدنا محمد وعلى آل سيدنا محمد كما صليت على سيدنا ابراهيم وعلى آل سيدنا ابراهيم وارض اللهم عن خلفائه الطيبين الطاهرين سيدنا أبوبكر وعمر وعثمان وعلي وعن سائر الصحابة أجمعين وعنا معهم بعفوك وكرمك يارب العالمين

  1. خطبة تلخص حياة جالسة بكاملها .. وعلى فدر ما استغربت بداية الخطبة بالوعظ بالخوف من الله والافتتاح بالحديث عن الاعمال .. وذلك يخالف ما توقعت . ولكني ومع سياق الخطبة وجدتها ممتعة رغم انها طويلة وواعية بقدر ما فيها من ثقل المعاني وعميقة بقدر ما فيها من المنطق والواقع.

    جزاك الله خير يا دكتور ونفع بك وجزاك الله خير عن الاخلاص والحرص والصدق واداء الامانة.

      الوقت المخصص للخطبة بالمسجد هو 40 دقيقة، يعني لحد ما طويلة لكني لم اتمكن من تغطية كل أفكار الخطبة لأن سياق الحديث أحيانا يضطرك للخوض بأفكار جانبية

    مرحباً بكم الأخ الكريم نزيه العثماني في بيتكم الثاني بتسبرغ! جزاكم الله عنا خير الدارين علی ارسال خطبتي الجمعة مكتوبة في هذه المدونة لمن لم يحضرها. قرأت نص الخطبتين و كاني اسمع صوتك الجهوري يصدح في أركان مسجد ICP. التذكرة شملت جوانب عديدة نفعنا الله وإياكم بها وأيدنا للعمل بها.نسأل الله تعالى ان يجعلنا ممن يستمعون القول فيتبعون أحسنه، واللهم قنا شر الفتن ما ظهر منها و ما بطن اللهم آمين.
